Stranger Danger

As a way to help keep all our children safe, SSYSL would like to remind everyone that our community is no different then the rest of the world and there are Level 3 Sex Offenders living in Swansea-Somerset. Unfortunately, the world is a scary place and there are people out there who prey on children.

For more information, you can visit the Swansea & Somerset Police websites.

As you all know, this is a very important issue that all parents must address with their children and one that requires open communication and an on-going reminder of what we all need to do to protect and keep our children safe.

Due to this, we would like to help with some reminders…….

  • Children should know their full name, address, and phone number.
  • Use the buddy system – avoid walking anywhere alone.
  • Trust your instincts – if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.
  • If a stranger approaches you, you do not have to speak to him or her.
  • Never approach a stranger in a motor vehicle. Just keep walking.
  • Do not accept candy or any other items from a stranger. Never walk off with a stranger no matter what he or she tells you.
  • If someone is following you, try to remember the license plate of his or her vehicle and immediately tell a trusted adult.
  • If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away or dragging you into his or her car. Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. If someone is dragging you away, scream, "this is not my dad," or "this is not my mom."

Parents: Please don’t leave your children at a practice or game un-attended since besides stranger danger - they are participating in a physical activity and accidents/injuries can occur.  If you “must” leave, please don’t leave without:

  • Telling the coach that you are leaving.
  • Get the coaches mobile number so that you can contact them if you are delayed in returning.
  • Give the coach your mobile number in case of an emergency.
  • Let them know what time you expect to return.
  • Don’t drop them off in the parking lot and then simply return later to pick them up.

Coaches: If a parent is not at the fields when your practice or game is ending, please stay at the fields with these children until there parents show up and we would recommend that you ask another parent to wait with you……. You shouldn’t leave them un-attended.
